Statement of Archbishop Dolan
Statement of Archbishop Dolan February 23, 2009
His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, has appointed His Excellency, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan, Archbishop of Milwaukee, to the Archdiocese of New York.
The Archbishop's statement follows:
"Thank you, Cardinal Egan, for your gracious words of welcome. To know you are and will be at my side is a genuine blessing indeed. Thank you, members of the media, and so many listening and watching with us this morning, for your interest and your welcome. You’ve made me feel at home already. Thank you, most of all, to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who is alive in His Church, without whom nothing is possible, with whom nothing is impossible. Thank you, Pope Benedict XVI, for your trust in naming me archbishop of this historic and vibrant Archdiocese of New York. My brother bishops, priests, religious women and men, seminarians, committed Catholics of this wonderful Church, I pledge to you my love, my life, my heart, and I can tell you already that I love you, I need so much your prayers and support, I am so honored, humbled, and happy to serve as your pastor. To our cherished collaborators in metropolitan New York, our Christian, Jewish, Islamic and interfaith colleagues, my pledge to you of continued friendship; to our civic leaders, and so many neighbors, men and women of such good will, my assurances of a continued alliance in all that is noble in our devotion to this expansive community. My special greeting to our Latino brothers & sister, such a blessing to our Church and our community. I look forward to knowing and loving you.Thank you, friends at home in St. Louis, and in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. It will be tough to leave you. I come before you in awe, with some trepidation, knowing I have a lot to learn, -- about you and about this dynamic local church.. Yet I come so confident in God’s grace and mercy, and so hopeful in the dream that is ours for a “future full of hope” as promised by God. I relish the blessing of spending the rest of my life as your pastor, neighbor, and friend."

Bishop Thomas J. Welsh
Anderson: Bishop Welsh Was 'a Great Champion of Life' and 'Dedicated Shepherd of the Faithful'
Supreme Knight Carl Anderson issued the following statement concerning the death of Bishop Thomas J. Welsh, who passed away on Feb. 19: "Bishop Welsh, who served both as the first bishop of Arlington, Va., and the second bishop of Allentown, Pa., was a strong, dedicated champion of life. I had the opportunity to walk with him during the annual March for Life, where he was a regular participant for many years. I am grateful for having been among the members of his flock, since I lived in Arlington throughout the time that he was bishop there. Knights of Columbus, and all who cherish the gift of life, have lost a good friend, whom we will always remember fondly."

Pro-Life Pastor Walter Hoye Sentenced to 30 days and fined $1,130.00

Pastor Hoye Sentenced to 30 days
Plus fine; Case Still at Impasse
OAKLAND, CA -- February 19 -- Rev. Walter Hoye of Berkeley, California was sentenced this afternoon to 30 days in jail and fined $1,130.00 by Judge Hing of the Alameda Superior Court.
Pastor Hoye was found guilty last month of “unlawfully approaching a person entering an abortion clinic in Oakland.” In fact, he had been peacefully carrying a sign reading, “Jesus Loves You! Let Us Help,” and offering women information on alternatives to abortion.
Video evidence offered to the court showed clearly that escorts from the abortion clinic had repeatedly harassed Pastor Hoye by trying to block his sign with blank signs of their own. (The videos can be seen at http://www.lldf.org.)
The hearing was eventful, and at one point a black pastor who was there to support Pastor Hoye was physically removed from the courtroom.
Dozens of African-American pastors from around the nation who were there to support Rev. Hoye were outraged by the sentence. They called it “a travesty that Rev. Hoye was found guilty for standing in the gap for black children targeted by the abortion industry.” Now they are simply enraged.
“It is absolutely incredible that in America an individual can be sentenced to jail for engaging in peaceful free speech activity on a public sidewalk,” remarked Allison Aranda, Staff Counsel for Life Legal Defense Foundation. Aranda stated that “Rev. Hoye has a legal right to refuse onerous conditions of probation. Rev. Hoye will not and should not agree to give up his free speech rights. We will appeal.”
Meanwhile, the court is allowing Hoye to serve his time through community service.
However, Judge Hing ordered Hoye to stay away from the clinic. Hoye objected to the stay-away order as a continued violation of his constitutional free speech rights. The judge imposed the order anyway. Hoye may be jailed immediately if he shows up at the clinic.
Rev. Hoye is an African-American pastor who feels called to work for the end of the genocide-by-abortion taking place in the African-American community. An estimated 19 million black babies have been aborted since 1970, according to Dennis Howard, President of the Movement for a Better America.
Howard said, “That is 7.7 times the African-American population of California, and nearly half (49.6%) of the 2006 African-American population of the entire United States. It is also 5,500 times more than all blacks lynched between 1886 and 1968. That is why Pastor Hoye and other black pastors feel an urgent need to speak out and to witness against abortion.”
Hoye said: “The silence in the Black American Church regarding the evil of abortion is killing us.”
That’s why he is willing to risk jail by standing in front of an abortion clinic in Oakland with leaflets offering abortion alternatives and a sign reading, “Jesus loves you and your baby. Let us help.”
Meanwhile, Dennis Howard has called on all pastors, clergy, bishops, and lay people of all faiths “to join in a nationwide campaign of prayer and fasting to end this persecution of a man of conscience.”
Howard has done extensive research on the economic impact of abortion and its devastating impact on faith communities in the United States. As an example, he estimates “that there an estimated 24 million Catholics missing because of abortion and the aggressive use of contraception. Plus an estimated 45 million Catholics who no longer attend church regularly. That adds up to a huge loss of faith as well as a huge financial loss. Pastor Hoye is right when he says ‘the evil of abortion is killing us.’”
Howard was also alone in forecasting the current economic collapse as early as 1997 in a special report that he is currently expanding into a book. For information, go to: http://www.movementforabetteramerica.org/images/AbortionBoom_2009.pdf
According to the 2008 U.S. Statistical Abstract, the most recent statistics show 654 abortions for every 1000 live births for Black and other races (a rate of 39.5%), compared to 221 abortions for every 1000 live births for whites (a rate of 18.1%).
According to Howard, “This reflects the targeting of blacks by organizations like Planned Parenthood, the concentration of abortion facilities in poor urban areas, and the active support of abortion by liberal black politicians like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Barack Obama.”
LLDF Legal Director Catherine Short and attorney Mike Millen, who represented Rev. Hoye, are currently challenging the constitutionality of the ordinance on Rev. Hoye’s behalf in federal court. They are hopeful the ordinance will be struck down and Hoye vindicated.

Seven States Have Launched Efforts for Personhood Rights for Pre-born - Even More Expected in 2009
Submitted by Keith on Wed, 02/18/2009 - 16:17
Federal and State efforts signal growing grassroots commitment for Personhood
DENVER, Feb. 18 /Christian Newswire/ -- Personhood USA is pleased to announce that since the beginning of the new year, Seven different States have started efforts for the personhood of pre-born children. In addition, Rep. Duncan Hunter has introduced H.R. 881, the Right to Life Act , on the federal level, propelling the personhood movement forward.
Five States have now introduced bills affirming the personhood rights of pre-born humans from the moment of fertilization including:
Maryland / HB925 Delegate Don Dwyer
North Dakota / H.R. 1572 Rep. Dan Ruby
Montana / SB 406 Sen. Daniel W McGee
South Carolina / H.3526 Rep. Liston Barfield
Alabama / SB-335 Sen. Hank Erwin
Oregon has begun a personhood amendment petition drive, and Mississippi's personhood amendment petition drive is expected to launch within weeks.
The common thread among all of these efforts is the goal to fill what is becoming known as the "Blackmun Hole" in Roe v. Wade. This is where Justice Blackmun implied in the Roe v. Wade decision that if the case were established that the pre-born was a person, the argument for abortion collapses. In Roe v Wade, it is acknowledged that the "fetus" is fully human, but did not grant the rights of "persons" until birth.
"Personhood USA is standing with strong support for all of these efforts. We are committed to working tirelessly to establish personhood in every State, because this is the only way to restore dignity to the humans most vulnerable among us," stated Cal Zastrow of Personhood USA.
"Personhood efforts raise the standard of what it is to be pro-life. We expect that as the understanding that all humans are people spreads, the injustice of abortion will end," continued Keith Mason of Personhood USA.
Personhood USA is a grassroots Christian organization founded to establish personhood efforts across America to create protection for every child by love and by law. Personhood USA is committed to assisting and supporting Personhood Legislation and Constitutional Amendments and building local pro-life organizations through raising awareness of the personhood of the pre-born.

Rally for Choose Life License Plate Reflection

Read more about the Rally here at the Diocese of Raleigh Website...
The kids and I attended yesterday's rally at the Legislature. We
made the trek to Raleigh to show our support for the Pro-Life license
plate that is being proposed for the 7th year. There was a small
crowd of maybe 100, who stood in front of the Legislative Bldg. and
then later took the time to personally visit their representatives.
But, standing there I have to admit I felt a bit of frustration and
sadness.
Then, last night I began reading "Rediscovering Catholicism" (the
book we got at IBT) and I was struck by this: "A minimalist is
always asking, 'What is the least I can do...?'" This morning I
checked my email and read the excerpt:
Record-Breaking Crowd Sends Message to Legislators
The New Hampshire legislature is known as the third-largest
representative body in the world, ranking behind U.S. Congress and
British Parliament.. .explaining in part why all 400-plus seats in
Representatives Hall and the visitors gallery were filled, with
homeschoolers standing in aisles and doorways, and lines extending
out the door and down several flights of stairs.
While at the rally, I was disappointed in the size of the group. I
was thinking about how impressive it would be if the sidewalk was
overflowing with people. Imagine if so many people had been there
that the walkways were nearly impassible. Imagine if the
representatives offices had lines of people outside of their doors
and down the halls. What kind of impression might that have made?
I thought about the Gay Rights Movement. While they are relatively
small in comparison to the overall population, they sure can hold a
rally that gets them noticed. Please, note that I do not condone
the hatred, intimidation or violence that is sometimes a part of
their tactic (nor do I condone the lifesyle). What is noteworthy is
that they recognize that a crowd gets noticed and is not so easily
ignored.
Of course, I have to concede that the media succeeds in ignoring the
March for Life in DC, but if that kind of crowd began to spring up on
a regular basis, would it be so easily overlooked? Additionally, I
realized that I am part of the problem. I am guilty of minimalism
and for that I am truly sorry. I have excused myself by reasoning
that I am too busy taking care of 7kids, homeschooling, keeping
house, etc. But when I read the word "minimalist" and what it
means, I felt convicted. I am guilty.
I've spoken with many people in the recent months about our fears in
this country. But we are not helpless. God is on our side and we
must trust in Him and follow His example. Jesus was no minimalist
and the disciples learned not to be either. I am writing this to
ask for your prayers for me and for others like me. Please, pray
that the gifts of the Holy Spirit will energize us and drive us into
further action. Let us not grow tired in calling, writing and
gathering to tell and show our representatives and our whole country
that we are here and we will be heard.
Thank you to those of you, who have been in the crowd for years now.
You are an inspiration and I would truly appreciate your prayers.
Please, pray also for my children so that they will become tomorrow's
leaders under the guidance of the Immaculate.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help, pray for us.
In His embrace through her Immaculate hands,
TB

You are cordially invited to a policy lecture on
"The Audacity of Hype: Wasting Taxpayer Lives and Wasting Taxpayer Dollars"
The Obama administration has promised to spend more money on embryonic stem cell research and promote more human embryo destruction, and the FDA has now approved the first experiments using embryonic stem cells in patients. The new President has stated that he wants to promote science, but he must have meant political science. The focus on embryonic stem cells emphasizes unethical and poor science, least likely to help patients, and wastes both human lives and dollars. If we are concerned about the patients first, adult stem cells are already saving lives and hold the real promise for treatments and impacting health care. Come hear the real facts on the science and the difference between hype and hope.

It is a great opportunity to be witnesses for Life! Some estimate the March in DC at 300,000. Let's keep the momentum going here in Raleigh as we process and join our voices in prayer for the most vulnerable among us, the unborn.
The procession will continue to be held the first Saturday of every month at 10 AM, except for this coming Sat. March 7, when there will be a Life Conference instead. Go to www.prolifeeventsnc .org for more details and to register. Now more than ever, we need to join together and stand up for Life!

Hope to see you at the present day Calvary this Sat. morning.
Letter in response to ban of Superbowl ad!
Dear Chairman Zucker,
Although I am disappointed in many ads run for the Superbowl we have continued to allow our children to watch the Superbowl by fast forwarding the commercials. This year we were not going to fast forward though the commercials because we were looking forward to the life affirming ad that would be representing our beliefs. After years of putting up with some really anti family anti life ads it seems you were going to make up for this. Now we will not watch the Superbowl at all and ask other to boycott the showing on NBC because of your decision not to represent all of the viewers by your rejection of this ad.
I urge you to reconsider airing the ad produced by Catholicvote.org for the Super Bowl. Although the ad makes a valid life-affirming statement in a powerful way, it is neither offensive or contentious.
Signed disappointed Steelers Fans!
NBC Rejected this ad for the Superbowl. I cannot believe they would reject money and this ad! There is nothing offensive about this ad. I did not watch the Superbowl and many others were boycotting as well. We have to stand up and let our voices be heard!

Boycott NBC In 2009 If You Care For The Unborn
Many are still in disbelief than NBC chose to turn away good money that would have depicted a very tastefully done and poignant message concerning the unborn that would have shown during Super Bowl...

Singular Experience for St. Joseph's Youth at the March For Life 2009
By Patsy Conley
With the result of the most recent elections, pro-life advocates could say it seems like utter defeat. In Raleigh, NC most of the pro-life representatives to our nation's capital lost their races. The majority of the new and remaining representatives despise the pro-life position, and frequently they despise the advocates. A group of young, pro-life men and women from St. Joseph's, however, attended, with over 100,000 others from every generation, a March to rouse the pro-life spirit of victory in our nation. In particular, on January 22, 2009, these young students became first-hand spectators of their government at work and their role in its formation. After the March for Life they attended a reception held by their only remaining pro-life senatorial representative in our nation's capital, Sen. Richard Burr. The senator was gracious to hold the reception and give his constituents a chance to speak to him first hand. Here is how the reception went.
The young marchers finished their march at around 2:34 PM, and knowing that Sen. Burr's reception began at 2:30 PM, they scrambled to get through security in the Dirksen Building and find their way to room G50 where, b y that time, the reception was sure to be nearly over. To their surprise Sen. Burr was also late and had arrived only minutes before them. The St. Joseph's marchers were among the first 30 in attendance. Sen. Burr invited everyone to sit down and he began with a few words thanking all for their effort in attending the March. Suddenly new attendees began to come through the doors of room G50 and among them Bishop Michael Burbidge and with him many familiar pastors, priests, and seminarians, well known and loved in the Raleigh Diocese. Soon the room filled to standing room only capacity.
Senator Burr began to take questions. Someone posed a question about the chances of defeating the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) which is sure to come up during the Obama presidency and, if passed, will have devastating effects on all the pro-life progress to date. From his initial response, it was not clear what Senator Burr thought of the FOCA. He answered the question by telling the audience that some fights are more important than others, and that we must give on some issues in order to win more important ones. It seemed the FOCA was not particularly on his radar screen. This was not good enough for this audience.
Senator Burr heard directly from those who held the defeat of the FOCA extremely high on the order of the day. The enlightenment that Sen. Burr received that day in those moments was led by non other than Bishop Michael Burbidge. He was gracious and thanked Sen. Burr for his commitment to life issues, but he did not hesitate to present the senator with a heavy burden. "If the FOCA goes through, Catholic Hospitals which provide over 20% of the health care in the state of NC, will have to consider closing their doors," explained the bishop. "This Act will undo everything that pro-life advocates have achieved across our nation in a single blow," he continued. He told the senator that he must be the fortress for pro-life North Carolinians' US senatorial representation. The bishop challenged the senator to b e worthy of those depending upon him to hold dear all that has been achieved on the pro-life front and do everything in his power to defeat the FOCA. It was a plea that resonated in the hearts of all attending. Sen. Burr appeared to be converted and was visibly affected by the challenge. He promised to not let the great pro-life achievements go down without a fight. His heart had been changed that day by his constituents; the FOCA is now decidedly on his radar screen. The students from St. Joseph's were able to witness first hand what a difference their voice can make, and the heart warming fact was that their voices were led by their very own bishop. They will remember this for a lifetime.
In the end, will the pro-life voices be enough? Will the battle against FOCA be victorious? Well, victory often takes on a mysterious face. It is clear in the hearts of the marchers that the battle will be fought regardless of the appearance of defeat, should it come in even worse measure in the days to come. This determination toward hope in the face of all difficulties comes from Faith which shows first hand that what appears to be utter defeat is, indeed, great victory. One only needs to look at the cross. How more defeated could that great Corpus be in all appearances, and yet this event is accepted as the greatest victory man will ever know! Because of this knowledge, Christians are called to a higher order of hope than the rest of the world. They are the only ones who can discover the evidence of hope in any defeat, and thus the persistence in hope becomes the grave duty of all Christians to the world. The young men and women from St. Joseph's led by their bishop, return home with lifted spirits. Their voice was heard and their hearts continue to ring the bell of victory for all to see despite the odds.
